Hailee Steinfeld is delightful in The Edge of Seventeen, a pretty uncomfortable coming-of-age drama that just happens to follow a teen comedy formula. Nadine is seventeen, her mom (Kyra Sedgwick) is a selfish boozebag, and her only friend just started dating Nadine’s brother. The discomfort is alleviated only by snarky Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson), the history teacher with a heart of gold, who remains upbeat even as Nadine repeatedly threatens suicide. There’s a pleasantly timeless feeling to the movie which isn’t so wrapped up in pop cultural references as its peers. Bonus points for the swoony soundtrack, which includes nary a trace of Stevie Nicks.
