I saw Lulu Wang’s The Farewell at Brown back in March and loved it. So did the young Asian and Asian-American women who mostly filled the auditorium, judging by the amount of laughing and crying. (The funniest moment in the film is actually the scene with the loudest on-screen sobs.) The plot sounds bizarre but is apparently not all that uncommon: Awkwafina plays Billi, an American-born woman who visits China for the first time to say goodbye to her dying grandmother (Zhao Shuzhen), against the wishes of her outwardly stoic parents (Diana Lin and Tzi Ma). The catch is that the family isn’t telling the grandmother the news, and her doctors go along with it, framing the big reunion not as a goodbye but as a random cousin’s wedding.
The Farewell is playing at Jane Pickens Theater, Mystic Luxury Cinemas, and Showcase Cinemas (Providence Place/Quaker Lane only)
