Settling into a very nice new home on the Pawtucket waterfront, Burbage Theatre Company offer a faithful retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s jazzy novel about the Long Island party circuit of 1922. A socially awkward, Oz-like playboy named Jay Gatsby (Jeff Church) spies on lost love Daisy Buchanan (Shannon Hartman), who lives right across the bay with her philandering husband. Outsider Nick Carraway (Dillon Medina) is the link between two and the glue that holds the social circle together. It’s a gin-drenched drama about morality and facades; Daisy’s husband has some dumb opinions and isn’t afraid to get riled up about them. The characters bop from the Buchanan house to the Gatsby mansion to a New York pied-à-terre, with the furniture shifting around frequently. Church and Allison Crews are particularly good as Gatsby and society golf star Jordan Baker. Coincidentally, they also get the most stylish costumes.
