In 1974, a fifty-year old businessman named Ramon Carlin skippered his way to victory in the inaugural Whitbread Round The World Race (now known as the Volvo Ocean Cup). Carlin shocked everyone by winning – he was older, inexperienced, unknown on the international competitive circuit, and flying the Mexican flag. The Weekend Sailor is directed by Mexican lawyer Bernardo Arsuaga and narrated by Duran Duran singer Simon LeBon (who competed in the race himself during the band’s heyday). The Newport Shipyard screening is part of NewportFILM’s annual Thursday night outdoor documentary series.
