Throwing Muses

Newport’s Throwing Muses were the first American band signed to influential British label 4AD in the eighties, releasing a string of well-received albums marked by enigmatic lyrics, restless tempo changes, and the otherworldly voice of Kristin Hersh. She’s an amazing live performer, with off-the-cuff banter about funny things her kids said, and a doll’s stare that remains eerily focused even as her head snaps back and forth. “The whole point of doing a show is to turn a room into a church,” she told The Paris Review in 2013. The band broke up amidst a lot of financial hullaballoo in 1997, after releasing the underrated Limbo album – my personal favorite, though few others would agree – then reunited in 2003 and again in 2013. The band’s performing as a trio. The concert marks their induction into the RI Music Hall of Fame, and includes fellow inductees Neutral Nation and Plan 9.

For what it’s worth, here’s my own personal Throwing Muses best-of tracklist:

1. Cry Baby Cry
2. Colder
3. Freeloader
4. Delicate Cutters
5. Crabtown
6. Tar Kissers
7. Not Too Soon
8. Dirty Water
9. Portia
10. Mania
11. Two Step
