Todd Oldham’s RISD Museum retrospective warrants multiple visits. New York’s it designer of the 1990s was known for his MTV appearances and anything goes approach to style, but the show succeeds by emphasizing the globally sourced craft that’s involved in, say, a pair of hand-painted beaded shorts. Over sixty mannequins wear a decade’s worth of looks in an exhibit designed like a formal French garden, but the outer atrium gallery has some of the best pieces, from a 1992 tufted coat to a vitrine filled with hundreds of buttons.
