This local theatre season has been very genderbendy. It started last fall with Trinity Rep’s female Julius Caesar, and then this winter there was Burbage Theatre Company’s (significantly better) female-led Titus Andronicus. Now Kevin Broccoli’s gone and rewritten Strangers On A Train, Patricia Highsmith’s earliest novel, replacing the thriller’s two male leads with women. Why? “I just felt like it,” he said in a recent Facebook post promoting the show. Both women have someone in their lives that they’d rather see dead, but initially only one is willing to carry through with it. That’s when things get really creepy.
