The stormy tabloid marriage of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor played out in real time as the pair performed in eleven films together. Under Milk Wood is one of the odder entries, a largely plotless day in the life of a small fishing village called Llareggub. (That’s “bugger all” spelled backwards.) Based on Dylan Thomas’s 1954 radio drama, the film features characters with names like Bessie Bighead and Organ Morgan who dream about dead lovers, then wake up and carry on with their days. With its large ensemble cast, Taylor only made herself available for three days and filmed all her scenes from London.
