The Newport Folk Festival is an unwieldy beast, as expansive as it is expensive. Westerly’s new United Folk Fest offers a nice counterpoint: the daylong show is free and features a similar caliber of artists. (The event takes place in Wilcox Park but it’s presented by The United Theatre, the 1920s movie house whose new life is being bankrolled by the same guy who turned the Ocean House into a luxury resort hotel.) Blitzen Trapper and The Barr Brothers are headlining, though I’d personally only trek down to downtown Westerly for Woods and locals The Low Anthem. Love Is Love is the latest from Woods; their tenth album is a warm six-track affair grounded by a languid, ten-minute hippie soundtrack called “Spring Is In The Air”.
