War of the Worlds

Boston Globe War of the Worlds 1938

It was just before Halloween when the young Orson Welles (with an E) unleashed War of the Worlds, an infamous sci-fi radio drama based on the 1898 novel by H.G. Wells (no E). Moving the action from England to New Jersey, the broadcast was so intensely realistic that some listeners were convinced that a race of Martians was actually invading. Barrington Library kicks off its Universe of Stories adult summer reading program with a listen to the original hour-long broadcast and a lecture from librarian Doug Swiszcz. This is one of many, many retro space-themed events happening around the state in the next month, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
