Begun in Scotland shortly after World War II, the Edinburgh Fringe Fest has grown to become the largest arts event in the world. More generally, fringe fests involve performances, theatrical or otherwise, in non-traditional spaces. The third Providence Fringe Festival takes place next week (July 26-30) in a variety of venues in and around downtown. The event’s grown considerably over the years, and a whole lot of local and national acts are passing through for the fest. (Here’s my incredibly optimistic itinerary.) As a festival preview, School One is hosting a reception and panel discussion about what fringe festivals actually are. The panel is moderated by the great Christina Bevilacqua from the Providence Athenaeum.
