There’s a lot going on in each large Willy Heeks painting. Raised in Bristol, the abstract expressionist painter pays tribute to his hometown in a rich series of paintings and works on paper, pulsing with visual information in a manner that belies the town’s reputation as a sleepy coastal outpost. (The most literal element is the sound of crashing waves, an audio installation emanating from a wheelbarrow.) Many pieces were made specifically for the show, but Heeks also reaches back with some older pieces loaned from other collections.
