Gal Gadot is great as the title character in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman. The costumes are amazing, the action is lively, and the whole thing is about fifteen minutes longer than it needs to be. (The end titles are great, though.) Diana is a mildly dippy peacenik on a beautiful island filled only with women (and animals), but then Chris Pine appears, trailed by the German navy, and suddenly she’s sailing off to London with him to stop World War I. He hogs some screen time – you can almost hear the producers demanding more American accents – but it’s all fun. Since they’re setting up a franchise there’s an overabundance of exposition – the whole film is a memory triggered when Batman sends her a watch? – while major plot points are cheerfully dodged altogether.
